News sources have reported that as little as two weeks ago, his 2004 autographed Donruss cards were trading for $25 - not any more.

Arlington, Texas-based Donruss produced about 300 of the autographed Phelps cards in 2004 and about 5,000 “common” cards not bearing the American swimmer’s autograph, Donruss spokesman Scott Prusha said.

…And at Arena Sports Cards and Games in Eldersburg, owner Dave Palasek laments that the famous Topps baseball card company, in its new Baseball Card History series, features 50 current well-known players “and not one Baltimore Oriole.”

“No one on the team has any national appeal,” he says. “You gotta have national appeal for collectors to care about you.”
